Retiree Brother Charles “Ed” Irving

1931-2021

Charles Edward “Ed” Irving, 90, passed away November 8, 2021 at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held 11am, Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Iles Westover Chapel. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service (10-11am, Saturday) at the funeral home. Interment will be at Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery.

Ed was born on January 4, 1931 in Des Moines to parents, Charles and Edith (Cryder) Irving. He graduated from Des Moines Technical High School. He served in the Iowa National Guard and the US Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1954, he was united in marriage to Betty Eloise Johnson and they shared 64 ½ special years. They lived in Des Moines and raised two sons. The family enjoyed traveling, camping and weekends at their home on Diamondhead Lake. Betty passed away on December 20, 2018.

Ed and his business partner, Dave Ward, founded ABC Electric, Inc. in 1959 and he worked there until he retired in 2003. He was a 51-year member of I.B.E.W. Local 347. He was also a member of V.F.W. Post 9127.

Ed is survived by his two sons, John (Sally) Irving and Robert (Maria) Irving both of Urbandale; grandchildren, Farah Collins of Trabucco Canyon, CA; Adam Irving of Urbandale, Jenna Irving (Taoufik Essaidi) of Victoria, B.C., and Evan Irving and Samuel Irving both of Urbandale; six great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty, and his sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Walter Stohlgren.

The family would like to give special thanks to neighbors and friends, Georgette, Terry, Kylie and nurse, Matt Rankin for their assistance in providing home health care the past few months.
