Jon Curtis Kirkhart, 71, passed away November 8, 2023 in Johnston, Iowa. He was born in Creston, Iowa on April 23, 1952, to his parents Robert Kirkhart and Mary (McKibban) Kirkhart Boatwright.

Jon graduated in 1970 from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa. Following high school, he began working in the electrical trade and was a member of the IBEW Local 347 from which he retired after 36 years. He would often point out buildings he had worked on when driving around the Des Moines metro with Sue and his children. Though he retired, Jon never really stopped working. In addition to jobs around the house and keeping up the yard, he enjoyed working with his friends on different electrical and construction projects. He was always doing something.

Jon met his wife Sue on a church ski trip to Colorado. They were married on April 3, 1982, in Des Moines and made their home in Johnston, Iowa where they raised two children. Jon enjoyed traveling with his family and friends. These trips would often be to hike in Arizona or ski in Colorado. He also had a love of sports, playing softball and volleyball. And more recently watching his grandkids play soccer, flag football and softball. Reading was another one of Jon’s hobbies, he enjoyed reading westerns and mysteries and always had a book near.

Jon was very strong and committed in his faith, trusting in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Each morning he would read from his bible and pray for those he loved. He was a member of Reach Church.

Jon loved and was loved by all whether a family member, a friend he had known for years, or someone he had just met. He could talk to anyone and never knew a stranger.

He is survived by his wife, Sue; children, Nichole (Ryan) Vos and Nicholas Kirkhart; grandchildren, Eli and Audrey Vos; sister, Candy (Mike) Mullen; brother, Allan Kirkhart; and his beloved nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.

Jon was preceded in death by his parents and step-parents.

Service will be held Thursday at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa. Family will greet friends from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. with funeral to start at 2:00 p.m.
